Gujarat Announced the 10% reservation for the poor castes on Friday, a move primarily aimed at pacifying the influential Patel community.
Benefit Upper Caste families with annual income less than 6 Lakh, likely to run into legal hurdle over 50% ceiling on quota in government jobs imposed by the supreme court.
But the decision, which could benefit upper caste families with annual income under 6 lakh, is likely to run into legal hurdles as the new quota will be in addition to 49% reservations already given to disadvantaged groups.
According to the Supreme, the government cannot provide quota beyond 50% of the population.
Gujarat is the latest state to cross the 50% limit of reservation, but it is not the only state. Before this, Haryana gives 10% quota to Jats, Rajasthan gave 5% quota to Gujjars, Maharastra is providing 52% quota to SCs, STs and OBCs.
The opposition Congress, which is trying to widen its appeal among the upper castes, was not impressed. Congress legislative party leader Shankersinh Baghela gives a statement.
The Congress Said that the EBC quota should be 20% and not 10% and the upper-income limit should be 10 lakh per annum.
The Job shortage in the state also led Patels or Patidars to suffer. The Patel account for about 90 lakh of Gujarat’s total 6 crore population.
